The real world has enough conflict as it is. Don’t you go bringing down somebody for escaping to a fictional place where they know they and the characters they love can be happy and safe.

It’s ok to want a space like that. It’s a personal thing and no one can take it from you.

It doesn’t have to be molded to be more interesting or entertaining to anyone else because it’s yours and it’s for you.

Its just an endless stream of “you’re doing it wrong”. You’re reading this wrong, you’re appreciating this character wrong, you’re appreciating this character too much, you’re not appreciating this character enough, its not enough that I don’t like this pairing but it’s wrong to like it, you’re enjoying this wrong, wrong, wrong, wrong, wrong, wrong.

And honestly it’s just tiring.

Yes, please, let’s talk about Hanmetra! It’s such a beautiful ship! It NEEDS to be talked about!! Like, aesthetics alone they are GORGEOUS. Hanzo and Symmetra are a total Queen and King coupling. Their mannerisms are very similar (which quite honestly, at the level which Symmetra and Hanzo portray themselves, I feel like most people would have a difficult time associating with them). 

I was SO stoked when I heard their interaction because I’ve felt that they were kindred spirits ever since I discovered their ship (I was so sad to discover they’re not popular, but hey, loving rarepairs is kinda just part of who I am by now, lol). 

Just the way they hold the concept of perfection of having such importance in their lives, despite everything around them and their circumstances being far from so, I feel like that’s the one thing they seek, just because of how perfectly UNPERFECT things actually are. Both were pretty much taken advantage of, albeit in different ways, and in Symmetra’s case, probably still being controlled. 

If anyone would understand Hanzo and Symmetra, I think it’d be each other. They still feel regret and sorrow but their pride/way of thinking also keeps them from really doing a huge 180 in character or values. They’re turning that 180, but very slowly, one degree at a time. And even then, once they’ve finished turning, they’ll be doing things their way, because they know what’s right for them and refuse to be anyone’s puppet ever again. If they were going to change characters, then I can see it happening if they have the support/friendship of someone who’s been in that same role.

Are these flaws? Yep. Are they flawed? Absolutely, but I honestly think that just makes them more interesting/relatable. And that’s why I love ‘em and I just really would love to see Blizzard have the guts to tackle this relationship, no matter the capacity ❤

She stares at him, half surprised at his audacity and half delighted to know she wasn’t the only one apparently wanting to move their relationship forward. 

They may not be the only ones sitting in that bar but she feels like this is their moment. He leans in close, a lazy smirk on his bearded face and eyes shaded by the brim of his hat. He looks so sure of himself, Sombra thinks to herself, like for once, he’s got a leg up on her. 

Still, she’s aware that one of his favorite things about her is her playful personality. What good would it do to sit there to blush and giggle at his words? That reaction would please and get him what he wanted…but it wouldn’t be what he needed from her.

So she gives McCree what he needs. Quickly, her fingers wrap around a tuft of his serape, gripping and dragging him further down to her level while her eyes search his. “When I’m done with you, you’re going to be the one who needs saving, vaquero.” 

The widening of his eyes and the nervous grin that tugs at the corners of his mouth is all she needs to know he’s very pleased with her response.

Both would definitely be feeling the pressure put upon them since the day the union was agreed upon. Symmetra, in particular, would be taking it especially hard. She’s never taken unexpected (and undesired) changes too well. She becomes secluded and private with her thoughts. 

Hanzo’s been bred into this sort of world that he just knows what’s expected of him when he’s brought into this marriage. However, when he meets his bride to be, he can tell that while she’s extremely intelligent, cultured, and gifted, it was more than likely never in her plan to end up in an arrangement like this. The marriage itself isn’t anything special, which while he suspects doesn’t bother him, also doesn’t help to take away from the fact that this is all arranged. 

Unfortunately, the Shimada Elders and Vishkar heads decide that their an alliance would be better controlled directly through marriage. Despite the Elders first wanting to give Genji the task of entering a marriage, Hanzo’s father decides it’s the head son’s duty to do what’s best for the clan. Hanzo keeps his personal thoughts on the matter to himself and while he thinks his fiance is beautiful, he knows it’s not enough to warrant any sort of happy, consensual marriage. 

The first night, Symmetra locks herself in the bathroom of the suite they’re staying in. At first, Hanzo doesn’t know what to do, let alone feel. He wasn’t too big on the idea of marriage, either. Most women he’s encountered have never understood him and the weight of the responsibilities he bears on his shoulders, despite being born into the world of organized crime. Symmetra, on the other hand, has never considered marriage, but even she believes that it’s something one should choose for themselves. The thought of offering herself to a complete stranger, to produce an heir out of necessity – it’s all overwhelming and she has an anxiety attack.

Hanzo sits outside the bathroom door, looking down at his hands as he hears his wife…this stranger, attempting to recollect herself. He knows not what they’ll do from here on out but he wants to make the best of this. He stands, gently ushering her to open the door. 

“Do not worry,” he begins. “I will never touch you.” 

He means it. If that is what she doesn’t want, he’ll find a way to explain to the Elders, the ones most eager for an heir within the next year. It takes a good amount of time, but he eventually hears the door unlock. He lets her open it and walk out. She looks exhausted and she stares at him, holding her arms close to her body. 

“I know this is strange and different,” Hanzo begins, hoping that his sincerity will show through his lack of comforting vocabulary. “But I will not force you to uphold any expectations Vishkar has placed upon you other than marriage.”

Symmetra listens and only nods after a moment. “This arrangement brings in a new era of order in the world. This is a great honor – I am serving a purpose.” Her sights lower to the floor. “But is there no other way for us to fulfill this outcome?”

“That I do not know.”

“No. I suppose you would not.” 

Hanzo looks back to the bed. “I will sleep on the couch. You may take the bed. When we arrive at the estate, I will arrange separate sleeping quarters for you.” 

“Thank you.” Symmetra sighs. “I apologize for my behavior. I am…usually more collected than this.”

“I understand. It’s been a long process until today and the resulting reality is of no comfort.” When she nods her agreement, Hanzo continues. “I’ve seen your work, Ms. Vaswani,” he says, graciously using her maiden name. “Despite our predicament, I look forward to discussing your accomplishments with Vishkar and visions for working with the Shimada clan in the near future.” 

Symmetra blinks but nods again, her posture relaxing slightly. “That sounds most agreeable, Mr. Shimada.” 

Maybe they won’t be comfortable with this marriage within a year. Maybe they won’t ever be comfortable with it. But Hanzo thinks that finding a kindred spirit within the visionary wouldn’t be the worst thing to come of this.

If traveling in Louisiana stay away from small town with low speeding zones. If you are to go into those please drive the speed limit and don’t stop for gas. currently playing through another Monolith Soft game, Baten Kaitos: Eternal Wings and the Lost Ocean.

it has a brilliant soundtrack by Motoi Sakuraba of ‘Tales of’ fame and its own Nopon in the form of Greythornes

its battle system seems to be a bit esoteric but it’s so gosh dang beautiful.

• there are six party members to choose from in all, and it is equally male and female, something you rarely ever see in video games
• the aforementioned female members are badass as fuck in their own ways
• great character development
• really good ost
• really pretty graphics
• lovable characters
• is a good, long length
• has an interesting battle system that always keeps you on your toes/makes you think quickly and strategically
• very good use of metaphor (example: kalas’ birthday happens in game, to signify a change in himself and growth of his character)
• features a motley crew of people who come together to form a strong bond of trust and family (this happens to be a major weakness of mine personally)
• its special use of ‘guardian spirit’ helps the player connect and care even more about the characters
• good/interesting story line
• gibari
• pretty/cool looking finishers and spirit attacks
• most ppl have wings and they are GORGEOUS
• various armor that usually would be restricted for males (such as the scale mail) can sometimes be worn by the females/restricted to them instead
• none of the females specialize in just healing

Baten Kaitos is a two-game series of JRPGs for the Nintendo Gamecube. It never really took off to become a hit – a culmination of imperfect timing given the demise of the Gamecube, lack of advertising, and other things – but it’s well-regarded as a cult classic among many, and most people who’ve played the game have excellent things to say. It’s voice acting is certainly… not the best (though I’ve played the game since I was eleven and thus cannot imagine any other voices), but the backgrounds and the overall aesthetic of the games are absolutely stunning. It has absolutely gorgeous visuals, and the graphics have aged pretty well. Baten Kaitos’s gameplay is also unique because the fighting is card–based. While the exact details differ from game to game, the overall fighting premise is that you have a deck of cards you build with healing, attacking, and defending cards – you then use these in battle for their intended purposes. It’s probably my favorite fighting style, honestly, I really like it!

One of the most interesting things about Baten Kaitos, imho, is that YOU, the player, are your own character! In both of the BK games, you are a Guardian Spirit from another world, bonded with the main character (Kalas and Sagi, respectively). You get to choose your own name (and gender in the first game), speak with the main character, and your presence is a plot point in and of itself (one that differs from game to game). It’s really fun!

All this sounds cool and all, Grell, you may say, but what is the game about? I’m glad you asked!

“A long, long time ago it was. Before people began to dwell in the sky. A terrible war was waged between us humans and the wicked god. After a horrendous battle, our ancestors entombed the wicked god, and left the polluted and barren earth to find a future in the sky…”

That is the intro to the first game, Baten Kaitos: Eternal Wings and the Lost Ocean, and aptly sums up the backstory. A long time ago, humanity battled against a wicked god, Malpercio – this battle polluted earth, and so five great islands rose up from the ground and into the sky, where humanity now resides. They take floating ships from island to island, and even have their own wings – called ‘Wings of the Heart’, they’re supposed to be a reflection of one’s soul. Each island has its own unique culture and look, but… it seems that one of the islands, Alfard, is trying to unearth the power of Malpercio for itself. You join together with a motley band of heroes to stop them, but perhaps there is more than the Empire to contend with… not all is as it seems…

The second game, Baten Kaitos: Origins, is a prequel to the first game, set about twenty years before. A young boy, Sagi (your spiriter!) is framed for the murder of the Emperor – on the run and with his two companions, Milly and Guillo, he must uncover the purpose and people behind the machinations of the Empire. But something more is at work here than the simple ambitions of man, and it may be related to the strange dreams Sagi has been having, with people he’s never met who know him, somehow…

Both of the BK plots seem straightforward. Save the world by collecting these items. Figure out who is pulling the strings and stop them – but BK is very, very good at plot twists. The plot twist in the first game I never saw coming in a million years, and I was devastated as a child… and it wasn’t even the only plot twist! Nothing is as it seems in the BK verse, and everyone has their secrets. ❤

I want to play, Grell! But I don’t have a Gamecube… Never fear! I’ve got you covered! First things first, download the Dolphin Emulator. Next, here’s the ISO for Baten Kaitos: Eternal Wings and the Lost Ocean, and the ISO for Baten Kaitos: Origins. All you have to do is unzip them and then you can play them on your emulator just fine! No Gamecube controller necessary, even – just make sure you set up your controls. I’ve been playing BKO like this for the past week-ish, and it’s been great!
