The way I see Cloudjumper is that he sometimes acts noble and reserved, but that he is under it all quite a big dork. Cloudjumper is an inquisitive and gentle dragon, and in those moments of curiosity, will let drop his regal airs. With new acquaintances, Cloudjumper is more likely to be stiff, and with those he trusts and respects, more likely to be open, friendly, and goofy. Cloudjumper might be more reserved and less bouncy than Toothless, but he’s still full of amusing personality!
Cloudjumper’s Curiosity
Curiosity is a large, noticeable facet of Cloudjumper’s personality. This is a dragon who is naturally inquisitive. He is curious about many novel instances, and will stare upon it with intrigue. Sometimes, Cloudjumper will step forward with little reservation to check something out.
The fact that Cloudjumper is a curious dragon is the very reason Valka was taken from Berk. Instead of fighting with the other raiding dragons, Cloudjumper sweeps inside a Viking house and curiously approaches a human infant. Gently, the dragon leans forward to learn more about this baby and interact with him.
Cloudjumper’s curiosity shifts from Hiccup to Valka when she steps in to save her son. Not frightened, Cloudjumper gazes at Valka and slowly comes toward her. This is amazing gentleness and amazing inquisitiveness. While many other dragons would have fled or poised themselves for defense, Cloudjumper remains calm and stares, intrigued, at current unfolding events. Cloudjumper is not afraid of Valka. Her sword doesn’t alarm him, even. Cloudjumper just finds her interesting.
So interesting, in fact, that he takes her back to the Bewilderbeast’s sanctuary, where, as Valka recounts it, he thought she “belonged.”
There are many other instances of Cloudjumper’s curiosity. Sometimes you just see it in his big yellow eyes as he stares at the sanctuary’s latest arrivals (Hiccup and Toothless).
Sometimes you see it with the cock of his head.
Sometimes, the curiosity’s even more obvious. Cloudjumper’s head will stay focused on Toothless as the Night Fury draws pictures in the snow. Because Toothless is moving, this means Cloudjumper constantly has to rotate his head to keep Toothless in sight. It comes to the point Cloudjumper’s head will turn almost completely one hundred eighty degrees around. But because Toothless’ actions are that novel and intriguing, Cloudjumper cannot look away.
It almost makes you wonder if Cloudjumper’s and Valka’s curiosities were working together when they snatched Hiccup from the sky back in “Toothless Lost.” Valka is obviously invested in this strange dragon rider. But Cloudjumper, with his obvious character trait in curiosity, could have wanted to investigate just as much as human companion.
Cloudjumper’s Nobility
Cloudjumper is not a rude or cocky dragon, but he does have some “airs” about him. I’m not saying that he’s pompous, but that he will sometimes make himself look regal, mature, or reserved. One gets the impression Cloudjumper is older than Toothless simply by his personality. (It is also canon, as Cloudjumper appears to be full grown when he meets infant Hiccup).
His reserved “airs”, for instance, manifest when he first becomes acquainted with Toothless. Instead of cheerfully greeting the dragon or curiously sniffing the Night Fury (like many dragons do in the sanctuary), Cloudjumper seems willing to stand his distance. He will keep himself erect and proud, looking like something noble. Toothless hopping in dorkily to befriend Cloudjumper, throws the dragon a bit off-guard, causing Cloudjumper at one point to retract his wing away from Toothless.
In some ways, this is because Cloudjumper is a reserved personality. Cloudjumper isn’t going to be a dragon who will be outgoing and silly with the first person he meets. This shows introversion on his part. It takes a little for him to warm up with individuals. Even when Cloudjumper comes to know Toothless, he does demonstrate formality to the new alpha – an action which astonishes even Toothless.
That said, once Cloudjumper warms up with Toothless, he’s also more likely to be relaxed and dorky.
Cloudjumper’s Dorkiness
Though Cloudjumper can be noble, he also can be a ridiculous dork. This is not the image of a sophisticated dragon:
And, as stately as this gesture appears, he is dumping snow on Toothless’ head.
Cloudjumper’s dorkiness isn’t as flamboyant as Toothless’ is. But he’s a dork. He can be regal, straight-backed, impressive looking… and still be a dork dumping snow on a random dragon’s head.
Cloudjumper’s personality is hard to describe. I feel it more than I can put it into words. He is softer than Toothless, more mature, more regal, more reserved, more introverted, slower to bubble up, but also incredibly gentle, friendly, sympathetic, curious, and loyal. I hope we get some good instances and memories with Cloudjumper in HTTYD 3 since he’s such a great personality already!
