So this is my first shot at this? But while listening to my old video game nostalgia music playlist on YT (like songs from games that I used to consistently play as a smol child), my mind crossed into headcanon territory. I thought to myself, “what games would the chocobros have played the most of when they were youngsters?”, and this is what I came up with…

.Noctis:

Sonic the Hedgehog games, and Animal Crossing. 

I was thinking mostly the two Adventure games for the Gamecube, and maaaaybe Sonic Heroes. I think he would really get into the music from those games, and enjoy the fast-pacedness and dramatic storytelling of it all. Plus the ability to switch characters and play out multiple different storylines. His favorite character would probably be Sonic himself, because of his vaguely cocky “can-do” attitude, no matter the situation.

As for AC? He would just enjoy the fact that it includes animals, probably even thinking the fact that said animals are your neighbors is hilarious. Maybe even find the concept to be cute. But he would mostly enjoy the laid-back slice-of-life feel of the game, and being able to vegetate to something that requires minimal effort thinking to play. Something calming. Something to help him fall asleep… [yawn]

All-in-all, I think Noctis would enjoy action/adventure games – maybe a touch of RPGs – or “harvesting” games (as the bf so calls the AC franchise). They’re relatively easy to play for the most part, and just make for a good time, whether you have someone else to play with or not.

.Prompto:

Pokémon and Mario games. 

Prompto seems like he’d be an excellent trainer, probably someone who plays many hours and gets involved with IV / EV breeding. And Im prone to thinking that the breeding aspect in general, is one of his favorite elements of the games. That, and the fact that he’s just some small-town kid going on a journey to save mankind makes him feel important.

Mario games are just a casual sort of gameplay for him. Something he unwinds to, and can play with friends or family if he wants. Mario games are also just really feel-good kind of games, and I think he would be fascinated by all the bright colors and more cartoon-y style of it. Mario games probably just make him instantly happier.

Prompto probably specifically likes the Mario Party games, because they’re meant to be played with other people, and he prefers that. He would most likely main as either Yoshi or Luigi.

.Ignis:

The Legend of Zelda games, and 007 Goldeneye.

I feel that Ignis would thoroughly enjoy puzzle-based games. He needs games that force him to think, and actually provide him with a challenge. Zelda is a good choice I think, because there’s many puzzles that require a certain level of effort to figure out – and damn him if he won’t scratch his brain to figure out those fucking water temples. LoZ games are heavily strategy-based, which runs right up Ignis’ alley. He’s probably intrigued by the dark and whimsical fantasy elements of the game, as well. 

I think he also enjoys more mature-feeling games. 007 Goldeneye for the N64 is one of Rare’s more mature games, and I personally think Ignis would be enticed by the idea of playing as a [British] spy. In multiplayer mode, Ignis would probably choose the throwing knives, as they not only mirror his use of daggers, but also that they are considered one of the most difficult weapons to use (but imo, one of the most fun). 

I also think Ignis would prefer playing solitary games, but would not necessarily be opposed to playing with others from time-to-time. If Ignis can’t figure something out, he’ll take a break and come back to it later after thinking over it for a bit. Also, Ignis is low-key a big ass nerd.

.Gladio:

Smash Bros. games, and Banjo-Kazooie.

So, it’s no surprise I pick a fighting game for Gladio. I see Gladio as kind of competitive, and Smash Bros. is a good series to exert that trait in, in a friendly setting. He would have probably taught himself how to do all the cheap kill tricks and perfect dodge rolls and stuff. He’d be one of those players that get a win-streak because he’s so expert and then playfully boasts about it, unintentionally annoying his friends. His mains are likely Samus and Captain Falcon.

Banjo-Kazooie would, I think, be more of a guilty-pleasure kind of game for him. It’s not one that he tells people about openly, but he spent many hours of his younger days trying to be a completionist with this game. Trying to save all the Jinjos, collect all the Jiggies and music notes… whoop Gruntilda’s ass and beat his save file with 100% completion. He’s probably even discovered all the hidden secrets of the game too, including the incomplete Stop-N-Swop minigame.

I also kinda see Gladio as being one of those people who gets really determined when trying to accomplish something in a game? Like, he knows it’s pissing him off if he keeps failing at something, but he refuses to just… turn the game off and take a break. He’s gonna get it, eventually. He’d probably even throw the controller halfway across the room in a fit at some point.

McCree and Sombra are very blatant about their joy in seeing each other after distance and time has kept them apart. It involves running and Sombra jumping into McCree’s arms to straddle him as he holds her. They kiss as if starving for the other’s lips. The few words McCree can get out are sweet and desperate while Sombra just says his name.

Spending his childhood in a broken home was not easy – especially when the distorted version of romance you get is how your drunken father beats up your mother every night – but it’s enough for little Jesse to understand that, no matter what life decides to throw his way, he’s never going to end up like his dad. And every time he reaches that conclusion, he gets a little bit closer to the actual meaning of love – every time he worries about his mother, every time he wishes there was a real man by her side, loving her, and taking good care of his family.

But, eventually, this twisted nest is torn apart by tragedy and a young Jesse ends up shaking hands with the dangerous Deadlock gang. There’s nearly no room for love or romance during those years, as the suffocating sights of a violence he still remembers impregnates his every vision: he knows what type of man he doesn’t want to be but the other man, the one he knows he can be, is still struggling inside every time he pulls the trigger and the older members of the gang can see it. Some of them even perceive him as a soft man, perhaps softer than he should be – he’s still young, and pretty much inexperienced, but his deadly skills are more than enough for the gang to keep him around.

When Sombra comes his way, her own backstory threatens to jeopardize everything he thought he knew about love and romance: she, too, has lost it all and has been forced to embrace violence to survive. Theirs is a rocky start, that’s for sure, but the man is patient, and immensely thoughtful: they share more than they imagine, so his number one priority is to make her smile, to make feel his love is simple – things have always been complicated for them, this should be simple. His idea of romance is also rather simple: perhaps a walk in the rain, when everyone else stays safe inside or a night of complete silence after a tough day. Small gestures, like subtle touches and a never-ending longing for proximity are always there for her whenever she needs it.

It takes time, but the hacker finally opens up, and lowers her guard. What he has to offer is peaceful, it reminds her of all those lazy Sundays of her childhood, before losing everything, back then when she was still a child and there was nothing in the world that could harm her. So his arms quickly become safe harbor for her, and the man cherishes this warmth they’ve found in each other – it reminds him of his mother, in a way, in the love she never got to experience, in a pain that’s now long gone.

• tons of forehead kisses and he will even give them to you when he has his visor on ((likes to be funny like that))

• doesn’t care if there are others watching, he will steal kisses from you in  front of everybody ((if you are the shy type, he will get a kick out of seeing your blushing face))
• if he’s working, he will pull you to his lap while giving you a few kisses here and there
• loves to huddle next to you in the couch with his head on your lap ((most of these moments happen when he just want a minute of peace or there’s nothing to do on his free day))
• has he told you that he loves you? If not, he will say it, even if he already said it like 5 minutes ago
• will talk about you to others because he does believe you are an amazing person ((and he loves you too much))

Genji

• loooves to hug you, he can’t get enough of them ((if he didn’t hug you today at least once, he will start to feel a little anxious))
• likes to prank or play around with you ((you will feel something poke at your side and when you go look at who it is, there’s nobody there))
• “Genji! I know it’s you! You and your ninja skills!” ((you can hear someone snicker in the distance))
• holding your hand could be called one of his hobbies ((just likes to stare at your intertwined fingers and rub at your hand gently))
• playing with your hair, even if it may be short, soothes him in some way and likes to put your hair into crazy styles ((tries his best to not make you fall asleep when he caresses your scalp))
• when the both of you are joking around and he hears you laugh, his heart flutters and remembers why he loves you so much

Zenyatta

• Let him put on his fuzzy sweater first and he’ll hold you for hours. He doesn’t actually need to sleep tho but listening to your heart beat while you do is nice.

Reinhardt

• He spends so long protecting others, he wants to feel safe too. Someone jet pack this man and do it right now! Be his shield from the outside world even if it is only at night when the two of you are in bed dozing.

McCree

• Sometimes he likes to hold you, sometimes he likes to be held. Just be careful of his drooling and you’ll be all good.

“Why are you like this?” Soldier 76 asks, his shoulders slumped tiredly. Blood oozes slowly from a cut on his forehead, and several hole have been blown in his jacket, showing burnt skin underneath. The sound of Africa by Toto plays faintly from the Orb of Harmony hovering over his shoulder.

“Tranquility without chaos is stagnation,” I tell him.

In a nearby corner, Junkrat huddles in a ball with his hands slapped over his ears. The Orb of Discord blasts Friday by Rebecca Black almost loud enough to drown out his whimpering. He has been placed in time out for once again trying to hit me with a tire.
