It hits me because… this game, for saying it is about hope, is not about hope. It’s about sacrifice.
I was talking with @demishock and we were talking about what we think should have happened. I really think I am going to end up writing the story where Ignis, Gladio, and Prompto only let Noctis walk up those stairs because they know…
Once the dawn rises, they’re going to go through hell and back to save their friend.
No “worn out and tired, accepting destiny.”
Fuck that.
I imagine them cleaning the blood from their weapons and walking into the Citadel. They manage to get to the Throne Room, and they take down Noctis’s body. He’s still warm and he could be almost mistaken for sleeping.
They bring him down to the first floor, and Ignis tells the others that he believes he knows how to save Noctis—
And this begins a climb up the Citadel. I imagine it is 113 floors of hell on Eos. They carry Noctis up the stairs, fight the daemons, and fight the Kings and Queens that have taken Noctis’s soul.
Every 10 flights, they meet one of the Armiger Kings and Queens. They fight their own demons. Their own insecurities. Their own fears. All for Noctis.
I received my copy of The art of Final Fantasy XV and people it is freaking beautiful, I actually cried. Totally worth it! This was originally a reply to another post, but I decided to put it here, too. I want to talk to the people who make the horrible mistake of writing people to “act like” what they’re supposed to be. The mistake of, basically, writing people as cartoon caricatures, stereotypes of whatever they’re supposed to be. Writing with the mindset of “Okay, how would a HISPANIC PERSON react to this?”, as if “Hispanic person” and “normal human being” are not the same thing. As if gender/racial stereotypes are reality. As if all minorities are different from the “norm” and need to react in exaggerated ways to fit what they are, and as if all minorities are a monolith, acting in the exact same exaggerated way, like aliens stepping off the mothership all wearing the same sparkly gray jumpsuit.
So, take this post as an guide for writing, frankly, ANY character at all. Even straight white characters. For this one, I’m going to use an LGBT character as an example.
Want a perfect example of how to write a good, believable LGBT character? Tracer in Overwatch. She got a fully
established backstory, lore, everything. All her relationships between
other characters were set up, including unique in-game voice interactions. The writers fully and completely created the character from all angles.
THEN they made her lesbian/bi.
Know what it changed about her? NOTHING.
Know what it changed about the story? NOTHING.
Know how many unique, character specific in-game interactions it added or changed? NONE.
Know how often it’s brought up? Apart from the initial reveal, NEVER.
Know how many plots it has influenced? NONE.
We
don’t even know if she’s lesbian or bi, because she never talks about
it. Ever. It’s not her defining character trait. She has an entire
personality, her life does not revolve around being a homosexual
stereotype. The reveal did introduce a girlfriend character Emily, but
since she’s not a playable character in the game, we haven’t seen much of her yet.
And when she IS there in the comics and whatnot? The dialogue isn’t “lol
we’re so gaaaaaayyyy hey guys this is my GIRLFRIEND because we’re
DATING because gaaaaaayyyy. NOSE KISSES FOR GAYNESS!” It’s “pass the
bread, please.” It has absolutely, 100% NO effect on the story any more
than it would if Emily were a man. She doesn’t “act LGBT”. She acts like a human being. Not that “LGBT” and “human being” are different things.
That’s how you write an LGBT
character who doesn’t make people cringe while reading your work. By making her a PERSON first, and her sexuality SECOND. And I
can just hear someone screaming at the screen right now “THAT SOUNDS
AWFULLY DON’T-ASK-DON’T-TELL TO ME”. No. That sounds like a realistic
fucking person. Because if YOU treat your sexuality as your most
important, interesting, and defining character trait, if everything in
your life revolves around it, well, you’re a pretty boring ass person.
And again, I just used an LGBT character as one example. This goes for writing ANY “minority”, or frankly, writing anyone at all. Don’t write with the mindset of “Okay, this person is OF THIS GROUP, so how would he react?”. There is no answer to that, and if you try to answer it, and if you keep explicitly telling the reader over and over that the character is of THAT GROUP, all you’ll get is a terrible stereotype of a character who nobody will like. When writing a character, pick his or her personality, and that’s it. That’s how you write compelling, believable characters, and not caricatures.

And inb4 someone says they did confirm her as a lesbian and added one voice line to the game where she mentions Emily… not everyone follows Michael Chu’s Twitter or knows every in game voice line. OP’s point still stands. It wouldnt matter if Tracer was lesbian, bi or pan. It isn’t treated as anything major in the plot. The characters who know (Winston only one we’ve seen so far) don’t treat their relationship as anything out of the ordinary, and recall Jeff Kaplan talking about it? He said they figured Christmas was the most normal setting to show their relationship because “we wanted to show normal things as normal”
It made it feel genuine. Not a token character, especially as she’s on the damn box and is the game’s mascot. It also wasn’t obnoxious or pandering, despite so many on Tumblr trying to make it that way.

This could also apply to someone with certain types of mental illness/disabilities such as Autism Spectrum or other social disorders. Some people are able to ‘pass’ and choose not to make it a point of casual conversation, but once you get to know the person they open up about it. Granted it’s a much different example than the one presented, but I figured I’d add my two cents 🙂
This is something that happens every day in your life. A shift of your eyebrow in skepticism, or the way your lip may twitch to a half smile cause you’re trying not to laugh. These behaviors are vital for writing in character, because not only do the allow you to visually see what is happening but it is also reaffirming whatever emotion your character is showing.
So why should you write it?
Much of human communication is non-verbal which means you need to also translate this non-verbal reaction in a post. It allows you to greatly enhance the emotions of another character and always another person to ‘visually’ see how they feel in a post. Most of all, this will add depth and volume to your post to make it feel more real. IT will make your character feel like a human instead of just another fictional person you look at from above.
Below you will find a list different type of emotions and what sort of body language can be exhibited to them.
Three ways to accent an action.
When writing about emotions, there are different ways to verbally write them out. Each one is unique in their own way, allowing you to show more about the emotion.
Emphasize the Emotion.
But doing this, you are expressing both the emotion and the body language. We’ll use a simple example. It’s short and simple yet you can sense he is happy.
John felt so happy that he was humming a tune while walking down the hall.
Complicate the Emotion.
Sometimes, even when you are feeling one emotion, deep down rooted underneath the facade of it all, there is actually an underlining emotion they feel. This is something you have to truly express otherwise no one will know.
John felt so happy that he was humming a tune while walking down the hall. However, it was obvious by the way his nose crinkled that he was disgusted by the actions beforehand. Instead, John covered it up by appearing pleased today.
Contradict the Emotion.
This is a little different than complicate. Contradicting means that you are claiming one thing when in fact its the other. In many ways, this has a variety of uses, from inner depth of the truth to what you see in person, or someone creating a wall. It could be considered a lie, but when is anything that easy?
John felt so happy that he was humming a tune while walking down the hall. In truth, once he was in the classroom, his shoulders slumped and a pout crossed his lips when no one was around, showing just how displeased he was with the situation.
Remember that you do not always have to contradict or complicate anything. Sometimes all you need to do is emphasize and that will be just fine. You don’t always have to have an underlining complicated for an emotion to make it more enhanced.
Do be afraid to use the Thesaurus to also improve an emotion. Such things as “happy” is a nice emotional word, but think of how much more powerful it is when you heard some is “overjoyed” or “content.” She how these emotions matched up with a body language can give two different styles of happiness? Mix and match to find what works best for your character at the time.

Use these resources to greatly increase the reactions of your character to another and create a more life-like world.

kind characters need depth. kindness being the only defining trait is just as boring as a mean, jaded character without depth. make kind, complex characters. please.
I just can’t help but love writing about Hanzo’s personality because he has one that makes it hard for him to really socialize with anyone. So I don’t think McCree would be the one to crack his shell because I believe McCree is also a quiet, keep to himself character as well but also knows how to socialize with others far better than Hanzo. He could probably see how emotionally unstable Hanzo is from a mile away, but the fact that the two go out for drinks show that their lone wolf and wildcard personalities somewhat do mesh. But for McCree to be the one to really..be romantic to Hanzo is just weird. I’d probably want to sit down and evaluate McCree’s personality more if I want to think about their romantic compatibility. Widowmaker and Hanzo though, share a lot in common, more than I even guessed honestly. Writing about their similarities would be fun too or at least thinking about it. But if I had to give an estimate.
Hanzo and McCree friendship compatibility: Possible, but it’s always in the hands of Hanzo and how volatile he’d be that day.
Hanzo romantic compability: Less likely, wanting to be in a relationship with a person in an emotional state like Hanzo is impossible. You’d always have to catch him in his weakest moments and sometimes that’s not okay. Hanzo’s worse is his best, his best is his worse. He’s so volatile and narcissistic, I’m pretty sure he’d turn the relationship toxic. But you’d have those little golden nugget moments where he’d actually seem like a person and treat you genuinely. Even then is it worth?

Real talk though, negativity in the self ship community really ticks me off.
No one ‘deserves’ a particular character more. No one and their fav is a better ‘ship’ than someone else and their fav. This is all really personal stuff that we all ended up sharing because sharing and a sense of community is fun.
Maybe it’s because I’m older and I’ve gone through some shit, but I cannot believe that people would bring nastiness into personal relationships with fictional characters.

Just like it would be really inappropriate to start negatively commenting on a stranger’s personal post about their life problems that they posted to communicate with their friends or vent, it’s not appropriate to be nasty about people’s self ships.
You’re either here to support them, or you get the fuck out. No one’s making you look at it, and it’s not hurting you. (If it’s an actual problem ie adult with minor character, you block and move on).
Because if you think being an asshole to people over self shipping is appropriate, you need to take a step back. We’re all just trying to survive here, and if you’re directly trying to impede that, you are a grade A fucker and I don’t want you near me.
Guess what??? Your faves still love you, all of them. Don’t let anybody tell you otherwise, because they’re incorrect, your faves absolutely adore you.
Having a problematic fave is okay! Having a villain/antagonist fave is also okay! (We all know they instantly become a huge softie around you anyways)

Nice (self care-ish) distractions from whatever is upsetting you:
Feeling unmotivated? Sometimes thinking “(insert fave’s name here) would be proud of me for doing this” helps! You could even imagine them giving you some encouragement before doing the thing and/or imagine them praising you after doing the thing.
Listen. To. Your. Fave’s. Voice. Don’t play the game or watch the series they’re from, just liSTEN TO THEIR VOICE. It’s the actual best thing ever to just sit and listen to your fave speak. If they don’t have a canon voice, listen to some fandubs or comic dubs!
Make a folder on your phone/laptop/whatever and fill it with pictures/gifs of your faves! Or even make specific folders for specific faves or sources, make all the folders, go fucking nuts. Look through the folder(s) whenever you please.
In addition to folders, make a playlists! No, not song playlists, i’m talking playlists of your favorite scenes, AMVs, memes, or anything else that involves your faves! Just… DO IT. (No pressure tho, but I 10/10 recommend)
Imagine your faves being there with you. This can be applied to literally everything. Crying/having a panic attack? BAM! your fave is there giving you a tight hug and whispering comforting words to you. Lying in bed? BAM!! your fave is lying in bed with you and you’re cuddling and it’s great. Just making some mac n cheese? BAM!!! Your fave is there, hugging you and resting their head on your shoulder like the big dork they are.
Draw you and your fave! Even if you can only draw stick figures, draw those fucking stick figures dude I support you. (If you don’t have the spoons/motivation than that’s totally fine too, art is fun but it’s exhausting, even if it’s stick figures)
Enjoy whatever source material your fave is from! Whether it’s a game, comic, book or show. (If your fave dies in canon I recommend stopping before you get to the scene, since that will just worsen your mood)
Write a love letter to your fave! Type it out first, then leave it. Come back a little later and revise it! Maybe write it down on some fancy paper, fucking decorate that shit, make it all pretty, spray it with perfume/cologne if you’re feeling that extra, put that shit in a nice envelope and keep it somewhere safe. (If you don’t feel like doing all that’s totally fine! You could always just post it… And tag me in it because if somebody actually does this I waNNA SEE IT)
One of the worst excuses I have heard from people hating on self insert ocs being romantically involved with a canon character is “Oh, that character would NOT be interested in your mary sue. It’s out of character and cringy. Don’t try and change the canon…” To which I respond with many points:
1. How do you know they wouldn’t be interested? This especially confuses me if other characters in the canon have fallen in love. Even if they haven’t, love has a tendency to come up in really random places, unexpectedly. And generally, the “mary sues” have carefully thought out backgrounds that puts them in a position where the two falling in love is plausible and acceptable. I know I spend hours thinking of how my characters could meet with my faves.
2. Is it really out of character? I mean, unless the character is confirmed aromantic, which not a lot are. Everyone is capable of falling in love, right? Is it out of character for somebody in real life who is single to fall in love? It’s a common thing among the living…
3. The whole point of fan works is to extend or change the canon in order to entertain ourselves, the fans. We (usually) aren’t making the things we make for the creators to look at and say “hm. Yes thats accurate. Good job!” We are making it for us, and everyone has their own reasons to self ship. Just because it’s a twist on the canon doesn’t mean it’s not interesting or exciting. Sometimes, the canon sucks so hard that we change it in order to enjoy it more. But I’m going to stop myself from digressing.
Bonus argument: “if it’s just for you, why would you post it? Nobody cares?????”
This is kind of a silly thing to say if you consider the size of the self ship support community. Everyone is supporting eachother and honestly I look forward to seeing other peoples’ ships. Saying that nobody cares is completely wrong. (Even people who get zero notes, just come to me and tell me about your faves and I’ll follow you and support you.)

You remembered the first time you saw the man at a Hunters HQ, in front of the board with all of the listings of daemons that were causing the most trouble for those that had survived the settling of neverending darkness upon Eos. You knew enough through rumors that the Starscourge was a part of some important prophesy, but as a seasoned hunter, you only cared about the amount of gil the catastrophe afforded you in the long run. He wasn’t dressed like the hunters that you were used to coming in contact with, but why else would someone be in a relatively isolated outpost specifically designated for hunters to catch up on the next best opportunity?
You found yourself watching him in interest, wondering why he wasn’t closer to the board to get details on hunts that would prove useful in future endeavors… until you came to the realization that he wasn’t as interested in the board in front of him than the ebbs and flows of the conversation around him. You lost track of how long you stayed seated at the table across the room, taking in his subtle yet fluid mannerisms as if he were a puzzle you were attempting to construct piece by piece. Eventually, he turned and walked away from the conglomerate of hunters with a surety that had you following him against your better judgment. You didn’t ever fashion yourself to be a stalker, but you were in inbetween jobs and trying not to let yourself get too complacent while allowing yourself a needed break.
The break wasn’t supposed to consist of tailing the mysterious man as discreetly as possible to an area in Duscae that housed a considerably troublesome Red Giant that had wandered way too close to Lestallum’s city limits on occasion, making the inhabitants of the only major city Eos had left since the Starscourge fell quite uneasy with the way it tested the abnormally bright lights that bordered the hastily constructed wall of the refuge town. You knew of that particular mark, but even for as foolhardy as you could be sometimes, you had stalled on it while you figured out an enticing bargain with a few other hunters to go in with you. There was no sense in dying over a bounty.
You were beginning to worry that this man didn’t have the same sense of self-preservation that you thought all sensible hunters should have, as you watched him leave the relative safety of the fluorescent lights to a wide clearing that was illuminated only by the stars in the sky that shone brighter in a world in which the sun had been taken for granted in the almost-forgotten days it was allowed to thrive.
Watching your own back to make sure that no daemons would sneak up on you, you stayed half hidden in a few bushes with your hand on your weapon, eyes trained and brows furrowed in consternation as you saw his figure nearly blend in with the darkness around him as he stood rather calmly in the middle of enemy territory. The minute the tell-tale signs of purplish-black smoke appeared and rolled over the ground, announcing the arrival of the giant daemon, your heart started beating faster in your chest as the man didn’t even draw a weapon. Does he even have one? You simply assumed he had something small and easily retrievable from inside that suit jacket he wore, but you didn’t remember seeing any harnesses or whatnot on his person. Don’t tell me he’s the dramatic type, wanting to end his life at the hands of the most powerful daemon in the area. You tightened your grip on your blade, already planning on jumping in and saving him against his will as the monstrous being towered over him with a flaming sword. Times may be tough, but nobody is dying on my watch.
