said to insomniacitizen:46 and Ignis por favor ❤ (i would ask for Ravus but you specified chocobros – glad to see you getting back into the writing game!! you were the first XV blog I ever followed)

I love you.

You could have said the words the moment your eyes caught sight of him.

Across the space of the busy market of Lestallum it’s an instant feeling that strikes you hard, like a bolt of lightning from Ramuh himself: as though to say “Stop! Look! Destiny is in front of you!”. And so you do stop and look.

His grey tshirt enhances a hint of tan, and is cut perfectly to show muscle that moves slightly as he inspects the vegetables of the stall you’re watching him from across. He’s immersed, focused on the task at hand, but relaxed. His hair makes you smile, odd but it suits him, swept up high and straight with purpose. Even the slight breeze that carries the scent of spices from the stalls doesn’t move his hair, you huff a laugh at the thought. You can see his eyes scanning the wares but he’s looking down so all you can really see is the thick line of lashes as they flutter every now and then. He starts to look up then and your heart beats faster and faster until someone shouts a name and he turns away.

And then he’s gone.

Ignis.

Impossibly you see him again on the battlefield.

All movement in the world slowed impossibly and you wondered if the universe decided to stretch this moment across the rest of time, to the point where everything just stopped and this was all that existed forever.

You would be ok with that.

All long legs and grace, he spins like a dancer but the daggers he’s in the middle of throwing promise something much more deadly. There’s fire at his fingertips, casting an orange glow against the sharp lines of his face, doing nothing to soften them. The embers spin behind him in a trail so complex you wonder what music he must hear when he’s fighting, because it looks so much like a dance.

Steps backward and forward, and one, two, three, spin, two, three.

Time snaps back with the force of a too-stretched elastic band, and everything moves too quick for your addled mind to keep up with it.

He looks up then, Ignis, and your eyes connect.

He has green eyes, like a forest… I love you, you think.

He opens his mouth then, and your heart soars in anticipation, and he shouts “Look out!”.

You hope, as you pass out from the Coeurl lightning that sparks in your veins, that you don’t have the dumbest smile on your face.

When you wake up, he’s there.

And from then on “I love you” is like a mantra playing in your head, so often and so hard it would hurt if you weren’t absolutely besotted.

You join the group, and fight alongside them to right the world, to make a day when I love you could be said without fear of one losing the other. If one had the other in the first place anyway.

Ignis hands you coffee in the morning with a small smile, knowing exactly how you like it after such a short time, and you love him.

He pulls you up on the battlefield, a hand against the small of your back as he hands you a potion, and you love him.

His sharp eyes in the rear view mirror as he drives against the setting sun, and you love him.

His friends, and they’re yours by now, teasing you quietly out of earshot, and maybe you just might say you love him after all.

When the time is right.

But the world falls apart, as the world often does, but this time it’s catastrophic and far reaching enough to blot out the sun.

“I love you” waits at the bottom of your stomach when you see grief fill him from Jared’s death. Righteous anger that sits behind his eyes tells you now is not the time, while also saying now is the time, since love is all that keeps this mad world turning and everything continuing on.

The trepidation that makes his lithe frame rigid as you all sit in the boat, skipping across the sea to Altissa settles “I love you” to a stop at the back of your throat, while at the same time it says that love is a promise to keep going even when things are tough.

“I love you” is on the tip of your tongue as you ready for the obvious trap that is Luna’s summoning ceremony, but to say it now would complicate everything, and maybe even simplify it at the same time.

Instead you say “Stay safe”, with every fibre of your being meaning “I love you”, and in to the storm you all go.

And then everything is so much worse, and “I love you” pales in comparison to the sadness on his face as he realises he will never see again. Pales against the way his voice shakes as he describes what happened when you were too far away to make a difference. And maybe, you think, this darknening world might just swallow love up alive.

So days pass, and Noctis sleeps, and Ignis seems lost in his prematurely dark world, and you feel full to the brim of sorrow and all the “I love you’s” you never said.

The teacup you place on the bedside next to a still Ignis rattles alarmingly in the absolute quiet of the room and you clear your throat, another “I love you” dying as you quash it down and put it with the others because “I love you” just might be a burden, a promise neither of you can keep, because Love is a promise of so many things, and the world and life is so uncertain and-

“I love you.”

“-What?”

And his hand is on yours while the other guides you down beside him on to the bed as though you’re the one that can’t see, and maybe you can’t.

“I said, I love you.”

“Oh,” and there’s something new building inside of you threatening to spill over if only your brain could catch up.

His scarred face, smooth skin replaced with pale splits and burned flesh, green eye turned white forever, looks so determined as he waits a moment in the unsure silence.

“I know that love is an uncertainty, and it’s a badly-timed promise in a time where nothing is guaranteed, but to love is to be brave and I’ve loved you for a very long time. I’m not the same man I was when I started this journey, and I know this might not be the best time, but I’m sure by now there’s no such time except now. But-” And he looks to you with such a raw expression, such vulnerability from one of the bravest men you’ve ever met, “I love you _____.”

“I’m such a coward Ignis.”

“Why?”

And that new thing building up in you finally spills out. And it’s light and full of hope and it’s a promise.

“Because I love you too.”
