Joseph: Joseph does what Joseph does best, he runs away from it. He’s sat in the hospital chapel, head in his hands, staring at the floor, staring at nothing. He can’t let himself cry, if he does he’ll feel it. The fear, the aching. He prays for Dadsona to pull through, he prays to be in his place. He doesn’t move until he hears Amanda’s arrived and then he has to be the strong one so he pushes back the agony in his heart and goes to wait with her.
Hugo: He was at the school when he got the news, he doesn’t think he just goes, races all the way to the hospital, trying to convince himself that everything was going to be fine. He paces so much you think he’d have eroded away the hospital floor. He doesn’t break until he gets a phone call from Ernest asking ‘where the hell is he?’ When Hugo tells him, Ernest goes quiet and then tells him he’ll be right there.
Mat: He breaks down the moment that he gets the call. He doesn’t go immediately, he can’t. Caremsita finds him still crying in the living room when she gets home. They go together, Mat feels terrible for being so emotional weak in front her but he can’t help it. Every time he thinks on the situation he’s in, of losing someone again, he’s in tears again.
Robert: The first thing he thinks of doing is getting a drink (or maybe 7) but he pushes the urge aside. He won’t be let into the hospital if he shows up drunk. So forces himself to sit in the waiting room, agitated, afraid, frozen. He wants to bail, to whittle, to drink! To do anything that will distract him from the choking sensation and stinging in his eyes.
Craig: He actually drops the phone. He’s stood in the middle of the field with his team. This can’t be happening, he thinks, they were supposed to always be together. How can this be happening. The mums start noticing him just standing there, then the kids do too. The twins try to shaking him from the trance of denial. They’re scared, he’s scared, River starts crying like she knows what’s happening and then he’s running to the car shouting about how they have to go.
Damien: Damien didn’t know how to process the news. He drives to Lucien’s school and just walks right into his classroom to collect him because he doesn’t know what to do. He’s quiet until they’re in the car and then the emotion just starts pouring from him. He’s shaking with each sob, Lucien holds him for a long moment before managing to calm him down. “He’ll pull through, Dad.”
Brian: He doesn’t really realise the gravity of the situation until he’s at the hospital and the doctor’s spewing medical jargon in his face. He hears the words “Might not make it” and goes faint, he has to sit down. He’s so pale the doctor’s worried about him actually passing out. He just sits for awhile staring at the walls as the world goes fuzzy around him feeling like he’s going to be sick. Then he thinks about having to explain this to Daisy and about Amanda suddenly being alone and he’s in tears.
