I know folks are Stonking Mad about the new data centre and the shuffling of servers. It is not ideal.
Square Enix told us that they understand it’s not ideal.
I’m not here to tell folks they shouldn’t be upset about the choices they have to make. I feel for you and it sucks. I hope y’all can decide with your friends/statics/groups to take advantage of the free transfers and extremely generous compensation and you can work to come up with a solution.
Based on what was said at the PLL, this was not a decision made lightly.
However, what we are seeing here is a development team seeing and acknowledging a problem and coming up with a solution that, while not ideal for one hundred percent of players (and, again, they have acknowledged this!!), should prove to be easy to implement and easier to manage on the back-end.
With the three data centres now somewhat evenly distributed by gross population, and world visits allowing people to port within that data centre to do their questing, it’s entirely probable that when Shadowbringers comes, we won’t have THIS happening on day one:
Do y’all remember this? Do y’all remember how stonking mad you were about it? My FC practically split in two over this. We spent the entirety of Stormblood rebuilding. We’re alright now, albeit small, and it’s all good, but hot damn that was a very awful first couple of weeks.
Or even better, how about this? I remember shout chat rage about not being able to progress. Do you?
These are things that the data centre shuffle are aiming to prevent or mitigate. And the development team is doing everything feasible that they can in order to prevent these things.
(Could they just go in and fix the background code to make it all better? Certainly they could, but it’s not just a matter of money!
It’s time. And that time needed would mean a content lull, and even with the present patch cycle there are a not insignificant number of people who crow about a lack of new content. If SE took, say, six months off to fix the netcode, people would leave in droves and render the time and money spent a complete loss. It’s a catch-22 situation.)
My heart goes out to people who need to make difficult decisions in the coming months. But please remember that this was not a fuck-you to you personally. This was not done specifically to break up your static/crossworld friends groups, and it is being done with the intent to have a more stable launch for Shadowbringers so that instead of complaining about queues or instance bottlenecks, we can play the story.
I hope that everyone affected can come to a workable solution, and I look forward to World Visiting many of you once the shuffle is complete.
