I am unsure of how to word this question though. So, pardon me if this gets wordy. [I’m a writer, it happens.]
See, I’m sure as you’ve seen with recent posts that I’ve included a photo of me, that I’m white. [Even more so cause I hide in inside all the time but …more on my basement troll tendencies later.]
But I am a writer that loves to write reader-insert.
And I ADORE catering my writing to someone else. I really do, and I love making the writing feel that anyone – no matter their skin color, weight, height, hair type, whatever can read it, and feel like they belong in that story.
That is my ultimate goal as a reader-insert writer.
But I know POC are left out of the loop sometimes. Because well, some of the things that I write are very catered to the ‘common white female’. The typical MC you think of in most Otome games. Meaning also the person that I am most familiar with that stares me in the face in the mirror.
Me.
SO my question is this – What can I do, to improve as a writer to include everyone in said reader inserts?
I have fallen away from using Y/N and E/C and what not because that pulls me out of the story sometimes. So, for an example, would it be better for me write ‘pet over your hair’ instead of ‘pet through your hair’?
I’m ignorant beyond what I am familiar with. But I want to change what I am ignorant about if that makes sense…I know that there are many things that, because I don’t know or understand them in a certain way, is pulling YOU from a story.
Help a writer out here? Help me understand?
