Because I always run through all possibilities, I wonder if it means he was a clean record kid before he got swept up with her. Or, is it that as a “ruffian” he was doing petty crime already but because he’s unambitious he would’ve never gone anywhere significant with it? 🤔

Rural boredom is a big motivator, in either case. In the latter, it WOULD be interesting and funny if the “chance meeting” was because they were both committing a petty crime at the same time.
