it’s very strange to see someone who ships genji with someone who isn’t zenyatta, mercy, or mccree – even having it as an OTP, no less. But it’s refreshing :D can i ask what about somji makes it your otp? aesthetic?

Oh man this is such a good question. Don’t get me wrong, I like all three of those ships too (Gency is a big fave in fact), but Somji is just… I don’t know, something about it really clicked for me when I first thought about it. Part of it is aesthetic, but I also feel like they’d just be really good together? 

I just love that some situational stuff in their lives they have in common, but there’s such a huge contrast between them even with it. 

They both had to go “underground” for different reasons – Genji because he was presumed dead, Sombra because she was discovered and she let the world think she was dead. 

They both reinvented themselves. Sombra created a new identity and resurfaced on the side of Talon. Genji was made into a cyborg and brought into Overwatch, but once he left and met Zenyatta, he became “whole” again. A new man, with a new outlook. Sombra became a new woman with a new purpose. 

They’re both cyborgs. Sombra might not be as obvious, but she’s incredibly augmented, just like Genji is, although in a different way. But here’s my favourite contrast between them: Sombra chose to become a cyborg. Genji did not.

What would happen if they met? Depending on when it is, there’s so much to explore. How would Genji feel, meeting someone who chose to become “inhuman”? What would Sombra say? Would she praise him for what he’s become? Would he like it? There’s SO MUCH to explore (and I plan to in fic, eventually). 

Just imagine… Sombra revealing she’s also a sort of cyborg. Genji running his fingers over her spinal implants. He’s found someone like him.

And I just love that. 

I also just think their personalities work well together. They can both be smarmy as hell. Have you heard some of Genji’s in-game lines? He knows he’s good at what he does. And Sombra thinks she runs everything behind the scenes. If they were to team up? Hoooo boy. 

Also, Genji just totally shutting Sombra down when she tries to threaten him? 

Sombra: You wouldn’t believe what I learned about you, Sparrow.
Genji: I am at peace with who I was. Your threat does not concern me.

GOOD. SHIT. 

I like the thought that maybe Sombra would be able to coax Genji’s more lighthearted side out a bit more. He’s often serious to a fault, and although she takes things seriously, Sombra’s often flippant and sarcastic. Maybe Genji could get her to be a little more serious, too. I think they’d balance each other out.

But more than that, I see them challenging each other. Making each other better. Genji is skilled in ways Sombra isn’t, and Sombra’s skilled in ways Genji isn’t. They’re both all about stealth, but they have different approaches. They could be an unstoppable team if they wanted to.

Also, Sombra can hack Genji. That would definitely be fun in the bedroom. With consent, of course. 😉

And yeah… like you said, aesthetics are a part of it too. They just look good together. And their ship name is NEON DRAGON. Or Hack and Slash. Pretty damn cool for a ship name, if you ask me.

Maybe I’ll write proper analysis on this one day, but for now that’s my basic answer, long as it is. But TL;DR: I think they’re well-suited to one another because they have common experiences, but radically different approaches to things, and I think their personalities mesh well. Also: hot and kinky. Always a plus.
