Literally when people were first speculating about Ravus’s involvement in Episode Ignis, I was all ‘You know what? That’d be pretty cool!’
And then I met an Ignis for a RP partner on my RP blog and went ‘Wow! These two would be really precious together.’
And now Ravus is, in fact, confirmed with Episode Ignis, and I’m in Hell.
I’m one of those people that can ship Ravus with practically everyone in the series (or out of series too, because OOH BABY THAT CAIUS x RAVUS THO. A VIDEO EDITOR’S PARADISE). And despite me of course having my favorites with Ardyn/Ravus and Gladio/Ravus, Ravus/Ignis nestled itself among the top five. Hell, the top three, for I don’t touch in on Ravus/Noctis content as much as I’d like to anymore (I should though!).
Like, in my perspective, Ravus would get along with Ignis far better than any other character within the FFXV universe. Even more so than Lunafreya, considering that those two fail to see eye-to-eye due to Lunafreya’s dedication to Noctis and her headstrong decisions that are driven by her blind loyalty to him and the kingdom of Lucis. With Ignis, I can imagine that Ravus would find it admirable that just because Ignis remains loyal to Noctis, he’s driven to points where he would be willing to fight, not willing to falter under any circumstances. Both typically uphold a professional demeanor as well, knowing that appearances are extremely important in their predicaments.
But I also like the idea of Ravus admiring Ignis because of not only his dedication and loyalty, but because Ignis is a character who still tries to show compassion despite his own hardships. Hell, we even see it during Chapter 10. Ignis was blinded of all things, but he was more worried about the others ruining their friendships with one another than his own well-being. Even if he didn’t really see Ignis during the events after Chapter 9, I can still imagine that he could find a great sense of appreciation in Ignis. Perhaps even during that moment when he met the party during Chapter 5 (because Ignis was the only one who didn’t have the sword pointed at his neck. Not intimidated but also not careless or abrasive like Gladiolus was during that moment). Ignis would, if he needed to, jump to Noctis’s aid, but not be as much of a reckless brute as Gladiolus would be.
But I digress with my little bit of rambling about the canon. Non-canologically, the idea of Ravus during the party member AU I ramble about often is a STRONG one, and one that really does make my Ravnis thoughts just soar. Because going back to that compassion that Ignis has, if Ravus was a party member, I imagine that Ignis would be one of the first to really show patience and genuine care about Ravus. His job’s to ensure to well-being of the party, of course, but he knows what it’s like to lose his family, his identity in a way – for he was raised into a life to serve and only serve. Meanwhile, Ravus was forced into a life of military hardship. Kill or be killed. It’s harder to assimilate to a difference lifestyle and to loosen up when all you’ve known is one kind of life, after all.
He would probably attempt to get Ravus to calm down enough with him and the party, so that Ravus won’t be a threat. But also, if they were to trust one another, they’d have to act like they did trust each other. Ravus is always on edge as it is, but the little things to show Ravus that the others genuinely do want Ravus to be a great ally and a friend is what Ignis would attempt.
Because Ignis makes a mean cake, and Ravus just can’t refuse cake.
But gosh, I can ramble about these two for a long time because I really like the genuine development that can happen between these two. In my little headcanon mind – compared to all of the other ship possibilities – Ignis and Ravus seems the most natural in development. Ships like Ardyn/Ravus or Gladio/Ravus fall under the ‘rivalmance’ tropes quite often, a ship like RavNoct is more on that angst-train or some rival/hate ship stuff, Prompto/Ravus is cute but probably stranger to imagine without something super cute and tropey happening, etc and so forth.
But Ravus and Ignis. Two souls with unwavering devotion to their loyalties, a common background of subservience, and a fateful chance to encounter one another in a race against time to find the ones they care about most… I can see alot of common comparisons between them, that’s for sure! And I think that’s what makes them such a great ship in my mind!
That, and the thought of some kinky Ravnis things is too good not to think about. *cough* I can delve into that another time~
