No, no, it’s okay! I figured it might’ve been something like that but I didn’t want to be rude and leave the ask unanswered or delete it ;_; And thank you for the sweet words!
But this idea is so 80s…I love it 😂 And I know you said that they would battle each other…but what if they were partners and competed against other pairings instead???
How much you wanna bet that Hanzo and Widowmaker would be the rivals in this AU? 😛 I can see them already with their sneers and looking down upon everyone else for being no where near as talented and ridiculing other competitors for thinking they have any chance of winning.
McCree and Sombra don’t really know each other before the competition. They both hear about the dance contest and really want the grand prize which is a hefty amount of money – both want to win for their own reasons. Their dance skills vary but they think they’ve got a good shot…until they realize that the competition is only for pairs. They both find this out at the registration booth and are about to give up and go home until they spot one another, the only other people who don’t seem to be in a partnership already. From there, they form a pair, both wanting to win enough to give it a shot.
Unfortunately, their styles of dancing don’t really sync up. Sombra’s more into modern sort of dancing while McCree’s got this old-school, slow kind of dancing. One time when they’re holding a practice session at the theater the dance competition is going to take place, they mess up on stage, of course just as Hanzo Shimada and Amélie Guillard happen to see. They’re mocked and told to give up if they have any sense of self-respect.
The two almost really do give up – even going so far as to just call it quits and go their separate ways. (Maybe even an argument where they accuse one another of not being able to do anything right? 😰) Of course, we gotta have that heart-to-heart talk between one of the protags and a mentor/guardian. Reyes talks to Jesse, asking him if he and his partner actually put in as much effort as they think they did, essentially telling them to stop being stubborn kids and work with one another’s strengths. In other words, dance together instead of apart.
It’s such a simple concept but it went completely over their heads. McCree finds Sombra, asking her that he’s willing to give it another shot. He admits that he may know nothing about fancy footwork but he’s willing to try. It takes her a bit but she finally gives in and agrees to be his partner again. This time, they practice more often, at either the basketball court at the park early in the morning or into the wee hours of the night at McCree’s garage. Jesse gets her to slow down and enjoy the music while Sombra gets Jesse to loosen up and move his body a bit more.
Eventually, the prize money becomes second in their mind, as they look forward to dancing with one another because it’s more fun than they’ve had in a while and they enjoy each other’s company. McCree even takes Sombra out to line dance while Sombra takes McCree to a street dance party. They might not win the competition but somehow, that’s not such a bad thing anymore.
