Overwatch: McSombra Hogwarts AU
I did it because I could… and also because @itshigh-boop‘s Hogwarts AU freaking killed me with just a few posts like afdsgjhjlkjsa how is that possible???
Some things to know: Jesse and Olivia are both from North America. (Jesse from the USA and Sombra from Mexico) who attend Hogwarts because reasons. They were born and raised in the modern muggle world so they sort of bonded over that while at school. Sombra is 14 and Jesse is 15. She’s a Ravenclaw and he’s a Gryffindor They already have a crush on each other prior to this fic!
That’s all. Enjoy!

Characters: Olivia “Sombra” Colomar, Jesse McCree
“Sombra, why are we going way out here?” Jesse whispered loudly between huffs, trying to keep up with the petite fourth-year.
“Because…” was all she said, a small smile on her face before dashing further ahead.
“That’s not an answer.”
“I told you, you’ll find out when we get there.”
“The hell we goin’ all the way to the lake for, then? It’s colder out here than when Mei froze half the school. Plus, I know you’re not much of a swimmer-”
“-Okay, first, just for the record, I’m the freaking champion on my swim team back home! Second, it’s not that cold. Third, we’re not going to the lake, we’re just heading in that general direction.”
“Weren’t we s’pposed to be quiet? And since when did you get such a colorful language?”
“Oh, please, like you haven’t said every curse word in the dictionary, Mister Texas-Born-And-Raised,” she teased.
“Hey, I’m fifteen, I’m allowed to talk like that.”
“Mhm, sure. Last time you ‘accidentally’ swore out loud on campus, you almost got detention and actually got a howler from your parents the following day. You’re lucky a lot of the staff and students here don’t recognize American phrases, or we wouldn’t be able to do this.”
He flushed a bit at the embarrassing memory, but quickly regained his composure. “Yeah, I don’t need remindin’.” He paused briefly before remembering what she just stated. “Wait, do what, exactly?”
Sombra looked around. The castle was still within view, and they were close enough that they could get back fairly quickly if need be. They would be concealed by the shrubbery once they sat down. Without wasting another second, she plopped down onto the fresh grass and patted the area on her right, gesturing for him to take a seat next to her. He obliged and leaned back lazily against the thick bushes while she sat slightly hunched forward.
“Alright, Colomar. You dragged my ass all the way out here, now what was this ‘secret’ you wanted to show me?”
“Well, in all honesty-”
“Whoa, you’re bein’ honest?! Seriously?!” She punched him in the arm for that.
“-I was going to wait until the first Hogsmeade trip for the year, but with you getting chosen as quidditch captain this year,” she dug deep into a hidden pocket in her cloak and pulled out what appeared to be a white, tangled string. “I thought we could celebrate.”
Jesse was confused at first but upon closer inspection and seeing an old iPod shuffle attached at the end of it, his eyes widened.
“You snuck in an iPod?! W-Why? How?!”
“Because you’re probably the only person familiar with muggle technology in this school and I couldn’t come up with anything less corny. It took me forever to find any artists we’d both like, so are you going to put in the earbud or not?”
She held out the earbud and Jesse took it from her thin, gloved fingers and put in in his left ear. He watched her turn on the lime green iPod and place it in between them. His head began echoing with acoustic guitar, and from the first chord of the song, he immediately knew what song was playing.
“John Denver… good choice.”
“Thank you.”
Both sat in silence for the first few verses, but Sombra found herself singing along softly.
“When he first came to the mountains… his life was far away. On the road and hanging by a song…”
Jesse had never heard her sing before this openly. When he heard her humming tunes in between classes along corridors and during meals, she would immediately silence herself and look away as if she was embarrassed. This time, however, she didn’t stop. Jesse didn’t stop listening, either.
“But the string’s already broken and he doesn’t really care…”
“It keeps changin’ fast, and it don’t last for long….” Now he found himself singing along with her. His falsetto style of singing wasn’t quite as pleasing to hear as her second-soprano voice, but both sung the chorus with a bit more volume and confidence.
“But the Colorado rocky mountain high… I’ve seen it rainin’ fire in the sky… The shadow from the starlight is softer than a lullaby… Rocky mountain high…”
Sombra knew the tune and the chorus to the sing by heart, but she let Jesse take the lead on the lyrics. When she was unsure of a word or two, it was clear in her hesitation, and Jesse would keep singing until she sung the lyrics she could recall. They sat together peacefully, singing until the end of the song came. She asked if he wanted to listen to another song and she said yes without a second thought.
The next song that played was by the same artist, but had a much more upbeat tone to it, and Jesse lit up when he realized what song it was. He immediately stood up, causing the bud to fall out of his ear, and held out his hand to Sombra.
“Come on, get up.”
“Why should I, cowboy?” she teased again.
“You brought me all the way out here to show me somethin’ no one else can know, and now I’m doin’ the same.”
Her eyebrows furrowed ever so slightly, but she took his hand and allowed him to pull her up. As soon as she was on her feet, he put the earpiece back in, placed her left hand on his right bicep brought his own flat against her shoulder blade and took her free hand and held it out so both were level with their shoulders.
“Jesse, what are you-”
“Just follow my lead.”
He stepped backwards a few times, brought his foot front and back, and took two steps forward. It didn’t take Sombra long to realize that he was trying to line dance with her, and damn he was good at it. She stumbled quite a bit, but he was patient with her and waited for her to find the rhythm again. He didn’t go too fast or too complex for her, but it was clear in her smile that she was having fun. How he knew she was smiling when she was shorter than he was and looking at their feet the whole time was anyone’s guess. Nonetheless, he found himself mimicking that smile all the same.
When the song ended with ‘Thank God I’m a country boy!’ their dance came to a stop. Jesse could feel his heart beating faster, but he only concluded that it was due to the light dancing they just did. The flush in Sombra’s cheeks didn’t go unnoticed.
“I think we have time for one more song. You want John Denver again, or someone else?”
“I’m down for one more John Denver classic.”
Sombra pressed play on the iPod again. Instead of leaning against the bushes, the two students opted to lay down in opposite directions with their heads facing each other so the headphones could reach both of them. The next song was slower, but the introduction was nearly unforgettable. Neither of them sung along. Both just laid there and let the song play out.
You fill up my senses… Like a night in the forest…
Like the mountains in springtime… Like a walk in the rain…
Sombra absentmindedly began playing with Jesse’s hair. He didn’t flinch away, so she removed her glove and kept playing with a few stray pieces.
Like a storm in the desert… Like a sleepy blue ocean…
You fill up my senses… Come fill me again…
She heard his head shifting against the grass and saw that he was looking at her. A soundless expression was in his eyes that she couldn’t quite place, but it was warm and she wanted it to stay. They lost track of where they were in the song and just looked at each other silently while changing their positions to lay on their stomachs. Neither of them paid attention to their fingers interlocking. Light brown met dark and lingered. For once, Sombra was glad she didn’t wear her purple contact lenses.
Let me lay down beside you… Let me always be with you…
Come let me love you… Come love me again…
The music and the words in their ears were rejected from their minds. In exchange, all the attention was spent on the sight of the other and the feeling of warm lips connecting on the cool autumn day.
The John Denver songs referenced to were Rocky Mountain High, Thank God I’m a Country Boy and Annie’s Song in that order.
Also, itshigh-boop was totally freaking out about the new matching demon-hunting skins for these two and now they’ve got me freaking out and I already have a pic planned involving those two skins so stay tuned k bye
