After this episode, can I say once more just how much of a good mother Midoriya Inko is and how much of a GOOD REPRESENTATION OF A PARENT she is. Like I can’t strees how good Horishiki wrote this scene and how good she writes Inko in general. When this chapter came out in the manga, a lot of people complained about her because she wouldn’t let Izuku go to U.A, but you’ve got to understand that this is a true conflict that parents face, you have to chose between your children’s safety and their personal wishes and ambitions. This is actually one (if not the most important) core of the problems in a parent son relationship and one that most children ad teenagers don’t get (until they themself become parents). You have to understand that its her SON.
The little ball of sunshine that she has raised, most likely on her own, who she has seen struggling with horrible situations that no parent wants their children to go through, like bulling and the prospect of her son living in a society that practically considers him useless. And then said child suddenly developes a super OP quirk that hurts him and, because he is a reckless brocoli, has the tendecy to put himself in danger ALL THE F*CKING TIME (seriously if I was Deku’s mother I would have died of heart attack by now). And do you know what is worst? That she is powerless to do anything, to help or support her child in this or any future situation. As a parent that is debasting. But do you know why she is a GOOD MOTHER and why I love her as a character?
She is aware of the decision that she is taking. She is aware that this has been Izuku’s dream all his life and that is going to be a horrible blow to her son and that she might be hated for it. But she is not the typical anime delusional parent that bans the protagonist to do something out of a misguided sense of parenthood. In other words Horishiki doesn’t write Inko, his mother, as “Antagonist” to Izuku (a common trend in shonen manga really) rather she is the representation of a valid point of concern for Deku and his development, both a child and as a character in the story (and let’s be honest it is also a concern for us because at this point we are all done with seeing Deku break his bones al the goddamn time!).
But what I love about Inko is that she is not unreasonable. She is not blind and doesn’t close her mind to oher peoples reasoning. After Toshinori makes his speech, that is ment to resure her as mother, she understand that other people care about Izuku (something that must be new to her, seeing how the middle school teachers treated Izuku) not only about his physical wellbeing, but about his mental development too. Not only that but it’s actually his son’s all time hero who makes a compromise to care for him. You don’t know how liberating for a sigle parent that is, Inko must have felt that she was the only one worried about his son’s recklessness, seeing that the school allowed Izuku to hurt himself and put him in dangerous situation . That is why she also tells Toshinori to live, because he is also somebody important to Izuku and somebody who worries about him as much as her.
So yeah, MIDORIYA INKO IS A GOOD MOTHER, IF NOT THE BEST MOTHER IN ANIME AND IF I CAUGHT ANY OF YOU BASHING HER I’M GOING TO BE PLUS ULTRA ON YOUR ASS!
