What got you into shipping McSombra?

Hoo boy…how did I start shipping Mcsombra?

That’s a good question. I suppose it was around the time I started playing Overwatch. The only reason I got into the game was because of Sombra. I saw fan art of her on deviantArt and I was like ‘I must know who this character is!’ I’d seen fanart of Overwatch before but no one besides ‘the cowboy looking dude’ and ‘the japanese samurai, same name as Hanzo from Naruto looking dude’ caught my interest and even then, it was more of a ‘oh look, neat-o fan art’ and nothing as much as Sombra actually making me go out and get the game where before I had been actively blacklisting it and avoiding it on tumblr because it was EVERYWHERE.

A few weeks into playing, I began wondering about the lore of the characters instead of just playing the game, particularly Sombra’s. Naturally, I found out about the comics and read ‘Reflections’ and saw that infamous panel featuring our favorite gunslinger and hacker 😉 At first, I thought that if they were together in the panel, that meant they must’ve known each other? And I was like ‘hm…they’re pretty different’ meaning in appearance – one being a technology heavy character and the other who, beyond a few futuristic touches, looked like someone misplaced in time. That just stuck out to me.

I then learned that Sombra and McCree had no relations beyond that no-interaction panel in the comic but the two of them wouldn’t leave my head. They just looked so interesting together. So I looked up more stuff about them. Comparing their stories, they had quite a bit in common, despite still being very different. I began looking them up to see if I could find any fan art. Of course most of my searches led back to tumblr and there I found both really neat fan art and a few headcanons. Then my search stretched to Ao3 (which still has a horribly low amount of mcsombra fics, btw) and I read people’s interpretations of the characters…I dunno. I just fell in love.

I’m still not sure why I love Mcsombra so much more than any other pairing in this fandom. I suppose it’s because Sombra and McCree are my favorites so it’s just feels easier and more natural to ship them? Either way, I love them and despite not being canon or whatever, I still think they have great potential and they’ll always be my favorite Overwatch ship and the most enjoyable for me to create and appreciate content for. ❤️️💜 They are also the only canon/canon pairing I’ve ever wanted to buy commissions for…haha! So yeah, I’m quite invested in them. 😚
