Mccree kept as low to the ground as he possibly could without putting himself in a vulnerable position, heaven forbid he give this lowlife the upper hand.
A small breeze blew through the field he was currently in, causing the tall blades of grass the gunslinger was using for cover to sway back and forth.
The movement of the grass was an inconvenience as it could possibly give away his position and it played tricks on his eyes.
Footsteps were heard off to his right side about fifteen feet away, too close for comfort. The footsteps became audible again which he took this as a chance to combat roll away from the direction of the sound.
Silence again filled the field except for the occasional cawing of a crow or grass blades dancing in the breeze. He strained his hearing for any sound that could give him a clue to his target’s location.
A sound from behind caught Mccree off guard, causing him to react in another combat roll. His eyes narrowed in the direction he had heard the sound come from, but the movement of the grass revealed an empty space. Was it a distraction?
The answer to that came in the form of a tackle from behind, causing the gunslinger to stumble from his crouched position to flat on his stomach. Then came what he feared the most, the tickling sensation from tiny fingers on his ribcage.
“Got ya papi!” came loud giggle from the form currently sitting on his back.
“You’re a little cheater ya know that!” he answered, flipping over and catching the small girl that had tricked him and returning the tickles back.
“Mama told me to be clever!” The young girl squealed between giggles, squirming around in her father’s arms.
After a few more moments of laughter, Mccree picked her up by the waist and set her back on her feet, brushing off some of the grass blades and leaves that were caught in her dark hair.
He smiled at the splitting image of her mother, black hair, olive skin, same sassy personality, the only difference was her eye color that reflected his own honey-brown ones.
“Aw, don’t be sad papi! We can play again but this time I wanna be the sheriff and you be the outlaw!”
Mccree looked down at his watch, it was almost lunch time and Olivia would be expecting them to be back.
“Tell ya what sugar, let’s go back home and rustle up some grub. Maybe ask your ma if she wants to be your deputy?”
The girl furrowed her brows for a moment in thought before beaming a smile and nod of approval.
“Come on papi, I’ll race ya!” she said as she picked up her pace to a run.
“Well that’s no fair Mia, you got a head start!” he called out, starting to his own jog in an attempt to catch up to her.
No doubt the young girl had inherited her mother’s cunning intelligence among other physical and personality traits.
Olivia, who at the time they had first met was going under the alias of “Sombra”, had used her own cunning to charm her way into his heart.
What at first were excuses of intel exchange became heart to heart conversations in which they discovered they were not so different from one another.
After the fall of Talon, the two felt safe enough to persue a romantic relationship which resulted in marriage and their first born child, the sunshine of their lives.
It came as no surprise to Olivia when she walked out onto the porch that Mia was the first to arrive back on the ranch, jumping up and down in excitement shouting “I beat you again!” to the man trailing behind her.
Mccree would always let his daughter win at whatever game they hatched up. What did surprise her was that at his age he had the energy to keep up with their four year old.
“Mami! Mami! Did you see me?!” A proud smile adorning her chubby little face, honey-brown eyes glistening in triumph.
“Si mi amor, I watched you run from all the way out in the field. You were so fast! Now go wash up for lunch while I scrape your father from the ground.”
Another smile and giggle before the four year old ran inside to clean up.
“Scrape me off the ground? What’s that supposed to mean?” the cowboy grumbled as he continued to lean on his knees to catch his breath.
“Nothing old man,” Olivia responded with a wink before stretching out her hand for him to take.
“Hey now, you’re no spring chicken either,” he said, straightening back up and taking her hand so as to walk her back to the house. His comment earned him a smack on the arm and kiss on the cheek.
“Say, why don’t ya join us for round two? Then you can experience being outsmarted by a four year old!”
Furrowing her brows and making the same “thinking” expression as Mia did earlier, his wife gave her own sly grin.
“You’re on cowboy!”
This was such an adorable and lovely and fluffy piece! What a fantastic take on the family AU idea and god, it’s so lovely! Mia sounds like the most adorable little four year old ever!
