it’s perfectly fine to take your selfships seriously. really seriously, if that’s applicable. i know a lot of people in the selfship community don’t consider their relationships real or literal, but purely fictional (and still important, of course!). i know there are other people who worry that they take it too seriously, often because they consider their relationships in a much more literal sense, or even consider their f/o their real significant other.
that’s fine. it really is! it’s fine to be more casual about selfship. it’s fine to do it just because it’s fun. and it’s fine to consider these relationships real, or consider these characters your actual significant others.
there’s a lot of variation in the self-insert and selfship community, which is wonderful! but i think sometimes that can be scary, because nobody is sure what’s acceptable or “right.” ultimately, there is no “right” when it comes to selfship. it’s what works with you and what resonates with you. this isn’t anyone’s story but your own, and what you feel isn’t for other people’s consumption, it’s for you.
so if you say your selfships are just for entertainment value, that’s okay! if your selfship is your literal relationship, and you believe you’re truly dating your f/o, that’s okay too! there are a lot of people in the world and we’re all different. as long as what you feel isn’t causing you or anyone else harm, you have a right to feel that way, and you have a right to voice your feelings. no matter how “strange” it may be to other people, what matters is that it uplifts you.
